If you plan to celebrate Christmas in Iceland, it is good to know some stories about our lovely Christmas ghosts.
One of them is the Jólakötturinn (Christmas cat). It is a giant cat that eats kids on Christmas night. Actually, it eats anyone who has not got new clothes, and it doesn’t matter if it is a sweater or just socks by Christmas time.
This is not a homeless or wild cat. Jólakötturinn has «friendly» owners - Grýla and Leppalúði. They are two trolls ugly and terrifying.
So, let's start with the fact that the Jólakötturinn is no mere kitten—it is a monster size of London's Tower. Jólakötturinn peeks through the windows, looking for kids and adults who didn't receive their new clothes during Christmas night.
There are various stories about the appearance of this cat. One is that the cat has been used as a threat to encourage everybody to finish all the weaving and knitting before the Christmas holidays.
Nobody wants to meet and be eaten by gigantic horrible Jólakötturinn.
